Anyone check this one out? I completely spaced it and thought it was in December. Bummed at that, because of the newly renovated theatre plus the Low Anthem. Would have been an awesome show.

Reviews? Tapes? Does the band even allow recording anymore?....

I sort of let myself forget about this. Plus I was sick. Only starting to feel better today. Re: Recording. They sort of don't. Sometimes people record and post without them knowing. There used to be more respect about stuff like that. Seems like today a lot of tapers just record as if they have permission, when they don't. Taking board feeds without permission and posting recordings without permission. Like Archive.org used to be set up so that a band needed to give permission. Lately it seems like people just use the Community Audio section to post bands that are not set up with the Live Music Archive section. Pretty annoying. The Barrs are more picky about what gets out there. With good reason of course. More control over first impressions and song progress and such. There will be a new album in 2013 (I expect). Luckily they have been shooting tons of cool videos in the last couple of years. There is a lot on YouTube for them.

Definitely. Agreed on all counts there. I get kind of annoyed by some people who tape or record video the entire show as if it's their right.

I definitely let myself forget about this show, too. I was even considering a trip up to their hometown this weekend with a friend, but backed out. Unlike you, I don't really have an excuse.

I agree with most of what you said but I don't know if I agree with this. Not the part that they are picky, but that they have good reason to be. I think they tend to put on a good quality show and that live recording only helps a band. The more casual fan is always going to go to iTunes (or some illegal torrent site) to get their music, it's the diehards who are poking around bt.etree.org or archive.org.

FWIW I always thought The Slip should be on archive.org as well. Yes there are some clunker shows out there or ones that feature Brad's voice in an unflattering light so I know where they are coming from, however if you look at their live recorded output overall it is pretty stunning. And to actually get a complete idea of the songbook (for The Slip at least, I know Barr Brothers only have 1 album out and not too many new songs) you have to go to the live material as a stunningly large proportion of original compositions never made it on to an official release.

Glad to hear you're feeling better though, Cleantone!

Awesome.

Also, ...Brad was talking in French there, briefly, yeah?

I think the show was sold out before the Barr Brothers were even announced on the bill. They only got 30min i think but I would have loved to see the restored theater, when I was in high school it was a porno theater.

I saw the setlist on an article somewhere, just the standards: beggar, lord, darkness, old mythologies, nothing out of the ordinary.

that said, i'm seeing them open for Patrick Watson at the legendary Massey Hall in like 2 weeks, I'll be sure to try and capture at least one tune on video now that i've got the iPhone5. Can't wait to hear how they sound at Toronto's top venue.

They played a good set, all songs from the record and others that I assume will be on the next -- Kisses from Chelsea, Darkness. I found the sound a little challenging... Definitely the biggest room I've seen them in, and a little muddy. No sit ins or guests during their set. Well received for sure. I put some pics up at the What I Like Is Sounds FB page.
