10-7-08 Brad Barr & Sonya Kitchell w/ The Slip

Post: # 20905Post Pstehley »

Brad opened up the show with an AWESOME acoustic set
Beggar in the Morning
Oh Belle
Sarah through the wall
vocal tune -maybe I'm mad? (that was the first line in the chorus, help?)
Maria La O
Vocal tune - Hot desert sands, lots of lyrics about clouds
Vocal tune - home dead, rolling hills?

sorry I'm not sure of all the songs, any help Pete (sorry I didn't really get to talk to ya.. maybe another time...)

Then Sarah Kitchell and the boys came on. Let me tell you, this chick WAILS! If you have a chance to see her, even if the slip aren't backing her, do it! The Slip fit in perfectly as their backup band, and they ended the set with a rousing encore of Dylan's Highway 61. It was AWESOME.
Soft Machine was ok, but I would have rather heard them do another tune where they could have really played off their vocals, but I understand why they did it. None the less, great show. I'm really glad that I decided to go. If your on the fence, do yourself a favor and just go.

Wish I could be of more help with the setlist for Brad's acoustic set (though it wasn't entirely acoustic). I can confirm that it was pretty awesome.

I did manage to snag the setlist that Sonya had in front of her. While they didn't stick completely to it (I'm pretty sure they played something else in place of Robin), it is much better than any setlist I could reconstruct from memory:

Here I Am
Effortless
Every Drop
Who Knows
No Matter What
Walk Away
Running
Burn
Soft Machine
Robin (??? Did they play something else here???)
Here to There
This Storm
Fire
Borderline
Soldier/Highway 61

I gotta say, the transition from Burn into Soft Machine was fantastic.
Sonya's vocal talent is absolutely amazing, she plays a mean rhythm guitar, and she's got great chemistry with The Slip. There are not enough superlatives to describe how much I enjoyed the show.

it was "You belong to me" (in place of Robin) which they made reference about seeing a $40 ukelele (probably at pittsburgh guitars), which after they did it, I told Sarah they should have picked it up cause that's what Steve Martin played in "the jerk" when they sang it.

it was awesome! don't know how many people knew it, but "the jerk" is one of my all time favorite movies.. so I thought it was awesome.. and I totally feel you on not having enough superlatives to describe this show.

so from what it sounds like you heard, my best guesses for brad's set would be...

? 1- what i've seen most often as "devil's harp"
also has a resounding "carry me back... baby" in the chorus... yes?

? 2- new tune... rhymes moon with room... lots of really smart and interesting lyrical inversion.... no clue for a title... in my head it's the "changed myself into a cloud" song.... drop-dead gorgeous tune.... oh... and has a play on the "red at night sailors delight - red in the morning sailors take warning" bit of lore... total treat

? 3 - "nowhere from here to go" i believe this is a nathan song...... probably.... i think.... always beautifully done when i've heard it

yeah, so i put the setlist from the Paradise show in my "safe place" until i got my internet turned back on.... and now that that has happened.... who knows where that place is.... i am starting to believe my theory that my "safe place" is really a portal to an alternate dimension or some black hole that swallows things until i forget that i'm looking for them.... so.... i hope to go looking for that later cause it was a great show...

but for now i hope this helps....

I'd love to hear The Slip play 'Highway 61' if they ever got back together. That would be such a great cover for them.
