best festival - High Sierra was beautiful as always, and I've got throw some love towards Hot Buttered Rum's Harvest Meltdown, but this year my hat goes off to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival....SO MUCH MUSIC of all different kinds, sandwiched between amazing food. What a blast!

best set - Thamusemeant on The Americana stage at high sierra....right after Percy was bailed out.

best show - Comes a Time was a day full of so many friends for me that it might take the cake, but damn if that surprise me show at the sweetwater didn't knock me on my ass

I wish I had kept track of the shows I had seen this year....sometimes the good ones still slip through the wide cracks in my brain....maybe I'll do it this year.

HIGH SIERRA!

best of high sierra: the two set SMMD show, hands down. although you're right lumpy, TMM's americana set was incredible too...

best of the year... my three day SMMD fall run. hee hee!!

honorable mention: rusted root at the Independant. first time i'd seen them in about 8 years. that show rocked!

I love this thread......

this is a tough one but here goes(In no particular order)

1. N'awlin's Jazzfest ~ Need I say more?

2. Jamcruise '05 ~ again, need I say more?

3. From the Big Apple to the Big Easy (Hurricane Katrina benefit at Radio City Music Hall in NYC) ~ The original Meters, Ray LaMontagne, Trey, Dave Matthews solo(and w/Trey), John Mayer Trio, Galactic, even Bill Clinton, all in one room at one concert. Plus I paid $125 for the good seats and it was well worth it.

4. Cream at MSG night 3 ~ First US shows since '68, very impressive, even from the nosebleeds

5. Olu Dara @ Regattabar, Cambridge, MA ~ If you've never heard of this guy do yourself a favor and check him out

6. Mr. Crowes Garden @ Pearl St., NoHo, MA ~ probably the best Crowes show I've ever seen

7. John Mayer Trio @ Avalon, Beantown ~ I'm not a big Mayer fan, he plays pussy pop for the most part, but his new trio is some serious guitar driven rock and roll. Check it out.

8. Nicholas Payton @ Sculler's, Cambridge, MA ~ From the new school of jazz, this cat is a serious player

9. Either Petty/Crowes show I saw this summer @ Greatwoods, Mansfield, MA

10. Allmans @ Greatwoods, Mansfield, MA ~ you can't go wrong w/the Allmans

#1 show I'm pissed I missed ~ Kings of Leon/Secret Machines @ Avalon (this show was in August and I'm still mad I missed it)

#1 new act I'm most impressed with ~ Ray Lamontagne

I probably saw the least amount of shows in 2005 for the past 5 years or so, but nevertheless was a good year, musically at least......

-HSMF05!!
Highlights include:

-the SMMD full show in the afternoon!!
-TMM morning set
-The Slip Late Night Set
-Brian Haas/Marco Benevento/J.Smart * Andrew Barr/Mike Dillon - THELONIOUS MONK TRIBUTE
-the Benevento/Russo Duo Late Night Set

All these sets were so good. I still listen to them quite frequently. Something about the Slip late night show hits me everytime. But really, Id say the same about the first three on the list though, all such great energy, love it.

Also on my list:

-Brian Haas' first headlining tour. Some awesome moments occurred on this tour, and I was lucky enough to see all of them save one... October 15th-22nd was an exciting week of live music, full of takes on jazz classics, haas/fred originals, and most of all, mindblowing improvisation with some of the best musicians out there. (Mark Southerland, Jason Smart, Jason Fraticelli, Marco Benevento, Joe Russo, as well as appearances by Fareed Haque, Jason Thomsovic, Skerik, Mike Dillon, Cheme, Elliot Levin, and Marc Friedman)

- JFJOduo - Jason Smart and Brian Haas brought the heat to the 7/14 openeing set of Les Claypool at the Newport in Columbus. Skerik, Mike D, and Jay Lane came out for some final mad-improv action. Great stuff.

there are more, but those are the moments that jump out

So I guess I didn't get out enough this year. I broke 1,000 miles on my bike, but I only saw a few shows. Still, best of the year has to go to ...

Feist.

That woman is HOT.

oh, and Freddy, since you gave us the template,
My vote for breakout group of the year:

The White Thighs.

I hear they're gonna cut an album as soon as the fiddle player gets back from sleazing in Greece.
