Something Learned Lyrics

Post: # 9705Post Dan »

Something learned
Something burned
Something alphabetical something you returned
Something worn
Something soft
Something that after you got it you realized that paid for that it comes

Common sense will tell you, that you might just be alone
Only just your mothers son that knowing how much you did till you’re over done

You were warned
You were told
You were released from captivity looking so “for more?”
It was black
It was blue
Its something that so unmistakable that everyone perceives knows that it’s true

Common sense will tell you, you might just be insane
Only just your mothers son that knowing how much you did till your over done

And it’s hardly changed your can figuring in numbers and the names you maintain
Hallelujah you can wipe the record clean you don’t have to be a part of some machine
Realize you are the words that the prophet spoke common decencies parted but they never broke
And you’re really just having fun, and you’re really just having fun, and you’re really just having fun, having fun

Something learned
Something burned
Something alphabetical something you returned
Something worn
Something soft
Something that after you got it you realized that paid for then it comes

Common sense will tell you, that you might just be alone
Only just your mothers son that knowing how much you did till you’re over done

And it’s hardly changed your can figuring in numbers and the names you ??? to maintain
Hallelujah you can wipe the record clean you don’t have to be a part of some machine
Realize you are the words that the prophet spoke common decencies may be parted but they never broke
And you’re really just having fun, and you’re really just having fun, and you’re really just having fun, having fun

I think that's "chrysanthemum mum".

In fact, I think the song may be called chrysanthemum.

couldn't swear to it, though. Really love the rocking, fifties-esque "you're really just having fun" part, too

Dan, what recording did you transcribe from? There's one from Tasoula in the lyrics archive (http://www.phrazz.com/slipbase/lyrics/C ... mum.lyrics) but I'd assume it's from a while ago so some lyrics may have changed... (Although I think it's still "something that after you got it, you realize that you paid more than it cost" and there's still sometimes "and you've really just begun" mixed in the end there...)

I always liked “Chrysanthemum” better as a title, simply cause it's more intriguing than calling a song after the first discernable lyrics.

I agree. Except it is hard to spell. Something Learned was one of the reference titles I came up with. getting a title for a new Slip song is not easy sometimes. They played this at that frat gig but it was jus the Chrysanthemum chant section.

a few things i always had heard, though as Kt points out, who knows, lyrics evolve...

"something warm
something soft"

"you were born
you were torn
you were released from captivity
looking so forlorn..."

"and let's all exchange
and reconfigure
all the numbers and the names
your brain contains
hallelujah..."

"comes in pieces
may be poor but it's never broke"

and yes, i do believe it's "chrysanthemum...mum" (kiku in japanese) one should always be wary of the way a "ch" spelling makes a "k" sound. if you'd like my dissertation on that subject just let me know...

and if anyone, ever, ever, ever, can figure out the words that come after "you've only just begun..." they should win a prize... i refer to that portion of the song as "to mumble mumble mumble mumble..." in my own head, but i'm sure brad's got words other than mumble in his head when he's singing it. then again, who knows...

peace,
love,
etc,
kloe

pst... hi kt, hola etahn, hey dan... wazzup?

first discernable lyrics
ha... it just dawned on me that chyrsanthemum is actually the "last" vs. the "first" discernable lyric.... actually, just kidding... i stand corrected. we all forgot the

"...stop..." at the end...

that's it, everyone is fired as slippies...

Yeah, I cheated... I always copy and paste or spell-check that one. When jotting down a setlist, I'd write the easier one too.

I've heard just the ending "Chrysanthemum" part added to the end of other tunes before too. I want to say it was "Run River Run" on 09/20/02 maybe? (one of those great shows no one was at). I think it's similar to how the part we now recognize as the ending to "Dear Melina" (which Brad played in a different arrengement in some solo shows) actually evolved separetely before becoming part of the rest of the song.

Also, which part of Dear Milena are you referring to.

How about "...that you paid more than it cost(s)"?
